Dental Sealants in Athens

Athens Dental Sealants

Pediatric dentistry is largely about helping your child avoid the dental problems that will cause pain and stress. Working together, we create a plan around your child's needs. In many cases, prevention is significantly aided by the application of dental sealants.

The idea of "sealing" vulnerable teeth against decay is still relatively new. Most of today's parents did not undergo this preventative procedure when they were young. Instead, they may have seen the dentist repeatedly for fillings or other restorative care. We prefer to see our patients smiling and pain-free when they visit us, so we recommend sealants as a way to keep posterior teeth as healthy as possible.

What are sealants?

Dental sealant treatment is something we may perform after teeth have been thoroughly examined and cleaned by our friendly hygienist. Application of the fluid material does not hurt. Once on the tooth, this solution seeps into the tiny, deep grooves on the chewing surface of the treated tooth. Here, it can become a solid yet somewhat flexible protective surface. When the deep pits of a tooth are covered with sealant material, it is nearly impossible for bacteria and debris to collect in these spaces. Statistics from the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry demonstrate the effectiveness of sealants, reporting an 86 percent reduction in cavities in the first year after application.

Which teeth should be treated?

Sealants are applied to the chewing surface of teeth primarily used to break down food. These teeth, the molars, are commonly affected by cavities due to the depth of indentations on the top surface. Sealant material lasts for about five years, at which time we can perform another application to keep teeth as healthy as possible.

Oral hygiene

While sealants are intended to protect surfaces that are prone to decay, they cannot replace the need for daily brushing and flossing. Home care is essential to optimal oral health for people of all ages. Parents are encouraged to assist their young children in caring for their teeth as long as necessary. Most children lack the motor skills to perform oral care adequately until the age of eight or older.

We are happy to perform dental sealant treatment during routine visits. Dr. Mathew or your hygienist is also a wonderful resource for demonstration of proper brushing and flossing techniques and for support as your child learns to perform these activities independently.
